THE MAP READER

Sixteen-year-old Michael escapes the realities of his small-town life by immersing himself within a world of maps. Yet his seemingly-happy isolation is broken by the serendipitous arrival of two young women into his life. Mary is twenty and blind from birth, on the verge of voyaging into the world on her own. Alison is Michael’s peer, whose grace betrays darker secrets. Suspended beside it all is Michael’s single mother Amelia, who cherishes her son, while simultaneously pushing him away.

Reviews

“Keenly, sharply focused writing (aided by [Director] Brodie’s personal passion for maps) and direction deliver plenty of cinematic fodder for audiences interested in the crisis of an adolescent whose spiritual and geographical limits are opened up in equal proportion.”
Andrew L.Urban – Urban Cinefile

The Map Reader is an engaging coming-of-age story with understated performances from its talented cast, including Rebecca Gibney as you’ve never seen her before. The award-winning New Zealand drama has a light, realistic touch, even when it deals with serious issues, and creates believable, yet complicated characters.”
Gavin Scott – TV Week

“The performances from veterans Rebecca Gibney and Michael Hurst are fine, but Brodie gets his best work from a trio of young stars – Jordan Selwyn and Mikaila Hutchison are both very good, but Bonnie Soper, as Michael’s beautiful and blind neighbour is Brodie’s hand grenade. And she blows the roof off this film in every scene she gets. For Soper’s performance, for its smart and unique script, and for a lesson in how to make a good film for about the price of a new car, go see The Map Reader. FOUR STARS”
